Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh: Several city-based activists and academicians stressed the need to spread awareness on the rights of migrant workers, as they play a key role in development of the city.


A workshop on the city-level network for homeless residents in the city, was organised by  Indo-Global Social Service Society (IGSSS) in collaboration with Guide Foundation.


On the occasion, East MLA Gadde Ramamohana Rao said that justice would be done in providing shelter to the homeless city-makers in the city. Central  MLA Bonda  Umamaheswara Rao lauded the efforts of several NGOs and promised to extend his support for eradication of poverty in the urban area.


Dr. Anjaneya Reddy, assistant labour commissioner, stated that many people in the city still did not have access to food and shelter and mentioned that several migrants face tough time due to lack of proper night shelter facilities in the city. He also explained several schemes that are available to the city-makers and directed the NGOs to spread awareness on the available schemes.


Dr. Velaga Joshi, principal, Government Degree College, Chinatalapudi, said that there were plans to visit city slums, where students will take the initiative to spread awareness on the schemes and issues of city-makers.


V Rajitha, student, said, “I have learnt several issues of the city-makers which I never knew existed,I will definitely play a key role in spreading awareness on the rights of city-makers”.


Dr. Sridhar Reddy,chairman of Red Cross, addressed the audience and distributed 300 mosquito nets to the homeless residents. With an aim to identify issues of city- makers, a core committee, comprising 14 members, was constituted and later a presentation on issues related to the city- makers was made by Zafar Khan, Coordinator of IGSSS.


RTI activists, NGO representatives, academicians from Nagarjuna University,students from Maria Stella Degree College and several city-makers attended the programme.
