WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY
World Environment Day celebrated annually on June 5th, highlights the pressing environmental challenges of our time. For 2024, the focus is on land restoration, combating desertification, and enhancing drought resilience.
At IGSSS, our focus is to build resilience and rejuvenate natural resources. Our key interventions include rejuvenating water bodies, constructing water harvesting structures, restoring mangroves, managing solid waste, and promoting climate-resilient agriculture. The inaugural edition focuses on our conservation efforts for the environment.
COMMUNITY-LED MANGROVE REGENERATION IN COASTAL ODISHA
Mangroves are critical for mitigating climate change due to their high carbon-trapping capacity. IGSSS’s community-led initiative focuses on replenishing coastal mangrove coverage in Odisha, aiming to decarbonize the atmosphere and create alternative income opportunities. Key steps include site and species selection, nursery raising, plantation zoning, and regular monitoring. The project targets replenishing 25 hectares of coastal mangrove coverage over three years, with significant community involvement and leadership. By addressing air emissions and enhancing ecosystem resilience, this initiative contributes to global decarbonization efforts and improves local livelihoods.

HEAT WAVE IMPACT ON URBAN POOR HOUSING
Heat waves have emerged as a severe climate crisis, with casualties rising steadily since the 1990s. Since May 2024, a severe heat wave affected India. Resulting in 56 related deaths and 25,000 heat stroke reported till date. Northern states, especially Delhi, were severely affected, impacting street vendors, construction workers, and other urban informal workers who work outdoors. However, the impact on urban poor communities within their homes has been less documented. In urban informal settlements, homes are often built with fragile, combustible materials and lack proper ventilation.
IGSSS addressed this crisis through an innovative pilot in four Delhi slums in 2023, installing low-cost Agri-bio-panels as heat insulators in homes. This significantly reduced indoor heat and improved living conditions.
